The then-New Jersey Nets traded for Deron Williams in February of 2011, gambling that they could convince him to re-sign at the end of his contract to a maximum deal with the team once they moved to Brooklyn.

They were right: despite overtures from the Dallas Mavericks and even a claim by Williams that he was prepared to buy a house in Dallas, Williams re-upped for the maximum allowable contract with Brooklyn. Because Williams re-signed with the Nets, the contract pays Williams over $25 million more than any contract he could have earned with another team.
