Contract: Joe Johnson signed a maximum six-year contract with the Atlanta Hawks in the summer of 2010, worth approximately $123.7 million. The Nets traded for Johnson two years into his contract in the 2012 offseason, teaming him up with Deron Williams to become the first “Brooklyn’s Backcourt.”

After their numerous overtures to acquire Dwight Howard fell short, the Nets acquired Joe Johnson as a consolation prize to help them win games. Despite his onerous contract — the Nets are on the hook for $89.3 million of Johnson’s contract — the Nets traded flotsam to acquire Johnson based on talent alone.

Options: There are no options in Joe Johnson’s contract.

Expectations: Joe Johnson is expected to be with the Brooklyn Nets for the duration of his contract, though he was certainly expected to be with the Atlanta Hawks before King acquired him. Johnson will be 34 years old in the final year of his contract in 2015-16, and an expiring deal worth a whopping $24.9 million.

If there’s a team looking to clear cap after the 2015-16 season, the Nets may look to shop Johnson around. (Of course, the Nets could also be that team looking to shed salary in the 2015-16 offseason — only Deron Williams is potentially under contract by then.)

After Johnson’s contract expires in 2016, he is technically eligible for a contract starting at a little over $26.1 million per season. That’s because of a clause in the CBA that states that a player’s maximum salary can be no less than 105% of his salary in the last season of his previous contract, even if that exceeds the league maximum salary. Johnson may even be eligible for more, depending on what the salary cap is set at in 2016 (which is impossible to forecast). However, this is a moot point, because there’s no chance anyone will offer Johnson that type of contract unless he suddenly turns into Michael Jordan.
